Old towns in “smart cities” between conservation and metamorphosis. Pending European Union guidelines

2014

In reflecting upon the role of environmental capital as represented by old towns in smart cities, the author reveals the consequences of re-plastering the facade of ancient buildings while emphasizing the resulting risk of globalization of historic districts. This is followed by a critical consideration concerning the active protection of old towns and their cultural typicality and geographical context, prerequisites for the development of specific guide-lines for the European Union. Explanation is also provided about how the restoration dynamics of the old towns are irreversibly changing the urban landscape in European cities. Strict regulations regarding the preservation of European old t…

Forecasting correlated time series with exponential smoothing models

2011

Abstract This paper presents the Bayesian analysis of a general multivariate exponential smoothing model that allows us to forecast time series jointly, subject to correlated random disturbances. The general multivariate model, which can be formulated as a seemingly unrelated regression model, includes the previously studied homogeneous multivariate Holt-Winters’ model as a special case when all of the univariate series share a common structure. MCMC simulation techniques are required in order to approach the non-analytically tractable posterior distribution of the model parameters. The predictive distribution is then estimated using Monte Carlo integration. A Bayesian model selection crite…

Isolation of Cholinergic Synaptic Vesicles from the Myenteric Plexus of Guinea-Pig Small Intestine

1980

The acetylcholine-rich myenteric plexus-longitudinal muscle preparation of the guinea-pig small intestine has been subjected to subcellular fractionation using modifications of both classical methods and that originally devised for bulk isolation of cholinergic synaptic vesicles from the electromotor nerve terminals of Torpedo marmorata by means of density gradient centrifugation in a zonal rotor. The latter method gave a vesicle fraction with the highest acetylcholine content so far recorded for a mammalian particulate fraction, 30.9 +/- S.E.M. 1.8 (5) nmol of acetylcholine . mg of protein-1. Electron-microscopical examination showed that it consisted of a homogeneous preparation of vesicl…

Tobacco use among medical students in Europe: results of a multicentre study using the Global Health Professions Student Survey

2012

Objective: To examine smoking prevalence, knowledge and attitudes, and tobacco cessation training among university students attending European medical schools using the Global Health Professional Students Survey approach. Methods: A cross-country, cross-sectional study was performed among 12 medical schools in four countries in Europe (Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain). The survey was performed during the second semester of the third year of study from March to May 2009. Results: In total, 2249 subjects entered the study (overall response rate 92%). The overall prevalence of smoking among medical students was 29.3% (95% confidence interval 28.1-34.7), with percentages ranging from 28% in Ge…

Nucleation and Growth of CaCO3 Mediated by the Egg-White Protein Ovalbumin: A Time-Resolved in situ Study Using Small-Angle Neutron Scattering

2008

Mineralization of calcium carbonate in aqueous solutions starting from its initiation was studied by time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). SANS revealed that homogeneous crystallization of CaCO 3 involves an initial formation of thin plate-shaped nuclei which subsequently reassemble to 3-dimensional particles, first of fractal and finally of compact structure. The presence of the egg-white protein ovalbumin leads to a different progression of mineralization through several stages; the first step represents amorphous CaCO 3, whereas the other phases are crystalline. The formation and dissolution of the amorphous phase is accompanied by Ca (2+)-mediated unfolding and cross-link…

Giant hepatic hydatid cyst as a cause of small bowel obstruction.

2006

Today, giant hydatid cysts are fairly rare even in endemic areas. We describe a case of an extremely large hydatid cyst of the liver that was causing massive compression of the neighboring organs, giving rise to a subocclusive syndrome of the intestine. After considering the various approaches available for the treatment of this disease, it was decided that radical surgery was still the best therapeutic choice, especially when extremely large cysts are involved. In particular, in clinical situations where it is difficult to perform radical surgical procedures, less aggressive surgery followed by drug treatment should be the treatment of choice.

Accuracy of magnetic resonance enterography in the preoperative assessment of patients with Crohn's disease of the small bowel

2016

Aim to assess the accuracy of magnetic resonance-enterography in predicting the extension, location and characteristics of the small bowel segments affected by Crohn's disease. Method This is a prospective study including a consecutive series of 38 patients with small bowel Crohn's disease who underwent surgery at a specialized colorectal unit of a tertiary hospital. Preoperative magnetic resonance enterography was performed in all patients, following a homogeneous protocol, within the three months prior to surgery. A thorough exploration of the small bowel was performed during the surgical procedure, using calibration spheres, according to the discretion of the surgeon. The accuracy of mag…

An extended version of the theory of planned behavour: Prediction of intentions to quit smoking using past behaviour as moderator

2010

It was hypothesised that: (i) intentions to quit smoking were predictable from group identity, self-identity, moral norms and past quit attempts, beyond the components of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), and (ii) that past experiences with the behaviour (quit attempts) would increase the predictive utility of the extended TPB model on intentions. The data was collected among 357 daily smoking students (M = 24 years). The TPB components accounted for 12.3% of the variance in quitting intentions, while the extension variables added 16.5% to the explained variance in intentions beyond the impact of the TPB. Past behaviour had the strongest impact on intentions (α = 0.30), followed by mor…
